Soccer Wins First Game on Street’s OT Goal
The Griffons took on their second game of the season against their rivalry team, Northwest Missouri State Bearcats Friday.
The Griffons had five corner kicks and six shots on goal while the Bearcats had four corner kicks and seven shots on goal bringing both teams to eleven shots each.
Sophomore Tina Palmieri, midfielder for the Griffons led with three shots total.
Freshman Carly Zabloudil and junior Kaili Campbell, both forwards for the Griffons, tied with leading with two shots on goal.
Junior Anna Mayer, goalkeeper for Griffons, finished the game with seven total saves.
The Griffons tied, bringing them 0–0 on the season.
After a drawn game Friday against the Bearcats the Griffons managed to come back Saturday in overtime to beat the Nebraska-Kearney Lopers 4–3 giving them their first win of the season.
The Lopers took the lead making the first goal in the game. The Griffons responded with Campbell making their first goal in the game tying the game 1–1 up till halftime.
Sophomore Abigail Hill managed to draw a foul for the Griffons that senior Claire Meyers, forward for the Griffons, was able to gain and connect on a penalty kick, putting the Griffons in the lead in the second half.
The Lopers then responded by scoring two bringing them up to their first lead of the game late in the second half.
Sophomore Lauren Street retaliated by scoring towards the end of the game with ten minutes left forcing the two teams into overtime bringing the score to 3–3 at the end of the half.
Street then took control by scoring a goal in overtime gaining the victory for the Griffons carrying the team to 4–3.
The win against the Lopers was Head Coach Damian Macias first career victory here for the Griffons.
The Griffons are now 1–1–1 on the season and will travel to Joplin to take on the Missouri Southern Lions Sunday, March 28 at 4 p.m.
