Toth’s OT Winner Caps Off Second Shutout

This year, the Missouri Western women’s soccer team is on a roll after starting their season with a two-game winning streak.

The Griffons played two-games this past weekend on the road against Wayne State and Southwest Minnesota State.

The Griffons started their two-game weekend against Wayne State Friday.

Junior Kaili Campbell led the Griffons with five shots on frame but couldn’t quite finish.

Junior Anna Mayer was able to keep the Wildcats from scoring with her sixth career shutout, managing to obtain four saves for the Griffons.

The Griffons had many opportunities, one by sophomore Jaden Skinner in the 6th minute, but the opposing team goalkeeper Katherine Hageman blocked her. Campbell also attempted in the 7th minute but was turned away.

The Griffons obtained a corner kick by Skinner, who Hageman stopped in the 21st minute.

Neither team could get the advantage to score in the second half, which ended the game in a draw.

The Griffons moved their record to 2–0–1 on the season.

They continued to their second game of the weekend at Southwest Minnesota State on Sunday.

They managed to play their second game 90 minutes straight with no scores, with both teams making no effort in the first half ending the half 0–0.

The Griffons had the better of the offensive possession in the second 45 but couldn’t follow through.

They only made one shot attempt in the second half, ending the game with a 0–0, which continued in overtime.

The Griffons came in strong in overtime, making big moves.

In the 96th minute of the game, Campbell attempted to score, but Mustangs goalkeeper Meghan Harkin saved the shot.

Junior Anna Mayer was able to obtain three saves in the shutout.

After the Mustangs continued to struggle with keeping the ball in overtime, senior Eszter Toth was able to pass the ball to sophomore Tina Palmieri. Palmieri then passed back to Toth, who took advantage of the opportunity. Toth made her first goal of the season nine minutes into overtime with a yard kick from 35 yards out, bringing the Griffons the goal they needed to win the game.

The Griffons are now 3–0–1 on the season and will be continuing on the road Friday at Missouri Southern State with a 6 p.m. kickoff.
